Star Wars

Many will now know the beautiful scenes which were shot here in Kerry for the Star Wars film Episode VII "The Force Awakens". The film location included the iconic Skellig Islands and also Ceann Sibéal in Ballyferriter, West Kerry.  The Skelligs features prominently at the end of the movie where the audience is reintroduced to Star Wars' original hero Luke Skywalker . Filming took place again in 2015 for the next instalment of the Star Wars franchise Episode VIII "The Last Jedi" which same out last year.

Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley returned to Skellig Michael, Dingle, County Kerry, for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, this time with director Rian Johnson

When the cast and crew of Star Wars: The Last Jedi returned to Ireland, they headed straight to Skellig Michael in County Kerry, where Rey finally discovered Luke. But this didn't signal the end of the Irish Star Wars journey. The location scouts were so taken with the Wild Atlantic Way, locations from Cork and Kerry to Clare and Donegal were also handpicked to appear in the movie. And so, cast and crew made the western edge of Ireland their home during filming. And the locals? Well, they were delighted the jedi were coming to town!

You can watch the reason why Skellig Michael was chosen to feature in this movie here.

The cast and crew were captivated by the Wild Atlancit Way and their experience in Ireland.

During filming, Peter Mayhew – 7ft 3in Chewbacca – popped into a local school, Scoil Baile an Fheirtearaigh, to say hello to the kids children which will be a long lasting memory for many.

When the shoot finished Lucasfilm took out 8 adverts in the local newpapers throughout the Wild Atlantic Way, as well as an ad in one of the national papers to thank the people of the localities in which they filmed.

While staying with us you can explore the setting for this filming and there are local maps available which detail not only this film location, but the locations for many other films which were shot right here on the Dingle Peninsula, including Far and Away and Ryans Daughter.
